10 Things I Learnt At #BML16

If you follow me on social media you will know that I spent my weekend in London specifically to attend the UKs biggest blogging and social media conference. This was my third year of attending the conference and I’ve come to realise it doesn’t matter how what sessions I attend, I always come away inspired. I am writing a full post all about my day but I wanted to share with you the 10 things that I learnt or want to improve on thanks to attending #BML16.

  1. Engage More On Social Media – I tend to wander about on my own a lot (although this year I didn’t) and not many people seem to know me. Of course this is fine, but I actually want to create some blogger friendships just like the ones that are spoken about so frequently throughout the event. The only way to do that is to actually make an effort on social media because quite frankly my Twitter feed was only really for sharing content. Since returning from #BML16 I have already made a huge effort to be posting consistently and talking to other tweeters which I’m really enjoying doing. Hopefully I will begin to form some brilliant friendships.
  2. Get A New Email – I was in a talk that was mainly about how to earn money. At one point that man speaking said that he tends to feel more obliged to work with clients that have their own emails rather than those hosted by someone else (outlook, Hotmail & gmail for example). This is actually something Hubby has spoken to me about before but we sort of decided against it. Well, I text him during this talk to get him to sort me out with a more professional email and so he has. I can now be contacted at [email protected]
  3. I Really Want A Canon G7X – Literally everywhere I looked there was a G7X teasing me. I have a brilliant Nikon D7000 which I use for all my photography needs but I’ve wanted to improve on my video quality as I currently use my iPhone 6+ for vlogging. Hubby doesn’t agree and thinks my phone is suitable enough. But #BML16 has definitely made me want the G7X even more. One for the birthday wish list?
  4. Be Honest, Be Authentic – I usually am when it comes to my blogging. Of course as a blogger we pretty much all style our photos and only share the smile ones rather than the finger-up-nose photo. I want to continue and improve on writing about the real life and including every little bit of it without sugar coating.
  5. #BML16 Works Better Over 2 Days – This year the conference was shortened down to being one full day. Although I had a brilliant time, it was so incredibly full on and by the end of the day I was exhausted. It was an early start followed by a busy day of networking and learning and finished much later. It’s taken a good few days for me to recover fully.
  6. Don’t Try To Save Money On Hotel – I picked Travelodge because it was close by and a cheaper price than the Montcalm that is at The Brewery. We had a pretty horrific experience and next year we will 100% be splashing out to stay at the Montcalm. It just wasn’t worth the stress just for having some extra pennies in my wallet.
  7. The Blogging Community Are Awesome – I am an extremely shy person so hope I didn’t come across as rude. I don’t get out much and if I do it’s mainly playgroups or something to do with the kids so heading into a room completely packed of 500 people was totally daunting. But actually this year I really did make the effort to speak to people and every single one was so incredibly kind and supportive. Also the bloggers who lead some sessions or were in the Keynotes were so inspiring.
  8. There’s A Thing Called Facebook Live – Apparently, it’s the “in thing” of the blogging world now. Facebook have launched a way to stream live to an audience which sounds pretty scary. I have had a little go here and there since returning from #BML16 and would like to improve on this as I’ve had a nice response so far.
  9. I Need To Value Myself & Blog Better – Mother Pukka was extremely inspiring to me. She said that her blog/vlog was created predominantly to make money so that she could always be there at the 3:30pm school pickup. I want my blog to grow, of course I do, and I feel so lucky to be able to earn money doing something I love. I need to believe in myself and focus on goals no matter how big they may seem.
  10. I Love BritMums Live – Pretty simple explanation. Despite not really enjoying the new layout of sessions/only one day event, I have not lost any passion that I had the first year I attended. I adore BritMums Live. It’s organised so well and with such love, the day is full of laughs and fun. It’s also a pretty good excuse to have a child free weekend with your husband with no responsibilities.

So there we have it. All the things I have learnt from my weekend. Well done to Jen and Susanna for hosting yet another fantastic event, but please please put it back to being a two day event!!! Here’s my little video from my day at #BML16:

The weather was absolutely incredible for our Isle Of Wight holiday. The early morning blessed …

  1. Thanks so much for blogging about the conference. Some really great takeaways, and interesting thoughts for us on the BritMums team to think about as well. Here’s to another great year of blogging!

  2. I so want to go next year!

  3. I loved reading all about your experience of BML16. I didn’t spot you there (I was there too, but like you, I am very shy and don’t tend to have the confidence to go up to people I’ve never met to introduce myself- something I want to get better at doing!) I didn’t make any sessions bar one, because with my pram it was too hard really. Glad you had a great weekend. Totally agree about the hotel- I stayed at the Doubletree by Hilton at canary Wharf and it was amazing, but quite a long way out. Was the Travelodge awful then? Sorry to hear that… I’d love to chat more to you on Twitter! Amelia 🙂 x

  4. It was my first time, so I can’t compare the two day format. A lot of people are saying they preferred it at two days, though!

  5. I didn’t go this year as I couldn’t afford to go!! I’d been to a blog conference the weekend before and couldn’t justify the expense. I really, really enjoyed BML last year though. It’s so nice to see the people you chat to online, in real-life isn’t it? 🙂
