Stress is a normal part of everyday life, and it comes in many different forms, from daily life hassles, such as forgetting to set your alarm, to chronic stress often caused by hormonal imbalances within the body. For these kinds of stressors, it is often easy to find solutions and learn from the mistakes made to avoid the same happening again. However, possibly one of the most difficult stressors to overcome are life changes, as most of the time, they are out of your control. For example, life changes could be anything from having to move home, to losing a loved one. If you feel you are struggling with some big changes in your life, then here are a few tips for coping throughout stressful events.
Accept that you can’t control everything
People often find change difficult to accept; however, the quicker that you can find a way to come to terms with the fact that things are changing whether or not you want them to, the quicker you will be able to deal with the situation. Try and view your situation from an outside perspective, and think logically rather than letting your emotions get in the way. Ask yourself what you would advise a friend to do if they were in your situation, and then try your best to follow your own advice.
Try to keep up with a normal schedule
If you have a family to care for, or a career to maintain, then sometimes that can only add to feelings of stress when you are overwhelmed with everything else you have going on. However, your daily routine can actually be one of the biggest assets you have, as by sticking to your normal schedule, it reminds you that life does go on, and that you just need to persevere.
Ask for help
You don’t have to go through everything alone, and there are always people out there who can support you. If your family isn’t already in the loop about what is going on, then tell them and ask for advice and support. If you feel it wouldn’t be appropriate to go to your family for help, such as if you have fallen out with some family members, or are going through a difficult separation from a partner, then you can always seek professional advice. For example, if you are struggling with a bereavement, then you could go to a grief counsellor, or if need help with a separation, then seek advice from a divorce or marriage annulment solicitor.
Give yourself a break
When the way of life you have become used to starts to feel like it is crumbling all around you, it is perfectly normal to feel a little lost and out of control. Accept that you are not going to feel one hundred percent like yourself for a little while, and remind yourself that it is okay to feel that way. Remind yourself that it is okay for life to change, and eventually you will get back to a place where everything feels okay again. During this difficult time, make a conscious effort to do things which you enjoy, as this will make you feel happier, and aid your ability to cope with everything else which is going on in your life.
