How much milk should my child be having in a day?

Milk has always been a big part of P2s day. She uses it for thirst and she uses it to fall asleep. When we were having a bad bedtime she ended up drinking two full 9oz bottles and it led us to question exactly how much she should be having in a day.

Hubby did lots of research on this and this is what he found out:

0-12 months
A baby up to the age of 6 months will typically have 5-7ounces (150-200ml) of infant formula/breast milk per kilogram of their weight. This will vary depending on baby. After 6 months milk intake may naturally decrease with weaning onto solid foods.

1-2 Years
You can now switch to full fat cows milk. They shouldn’t have any more than 24ounces (680ml) in a 24 hour period. Milk is no longer a food and is a drink now.

2-5 Years
If you’re child is having a balanced diet then they should be switched to semi-skimmed milk as the fat content is half of full fat milk. If they don’t like milk you should give them calcium rich foods like cheese and yoghurt. Remember if they have too much milk it can cause your child to be less hungry for food.

With this is mind we knew P2 was having far too much milk in a day! She’d have around two 9oz bottles just in the night time alone, then a 5oz bottle and occasionally more at nap times once sometimes even twice a day, plus she eats very well and has yoghurts during the day too. It’s shocking that she’s not overweight really.

P1 is a different story though. According to the recommendations she should be on semi-skimmed by now but due to all her health issues with growth we’ve kept her on full fat milk and she has just one or two cups a day.

For the past three or four days we’ve stopped day time milk for P2. Purely because she has her daily intake at bedtime and during the night. She’s still eating very well and surprisingly she falls asleep for her nap easily with just a drink of water/juice and a cuddle.

However, at bedtime P2 tends to refuse her milk now. For the past two nights she’s been awake a lot, especially last night which was every hour. I don’t know if it’s due to the reduced amount of milk or the change in bed, or even the fact they’ve now got a black out blind on the window.

All I know is that with the combined late bedtimes and refusing of bedtimes, I’m exhausted and running on nothing but food.

Last night was a better night for us. She had her 5oz bottle of milk downstairs then had 9oz before bed. Good luck with your journey.

  2. Agree with above 🙂
