Oh Go On Then… Jump Into Bed With Me

What would you do for a decent nights sleep?

I finally got P1 home from hospital when she was 27days old. The first week of having her home was a nightmare – she was constantly sick, constantly crying and generally not well. By this point my milk had unfortunately dried up so she was being formula fed and the hospital advised that her sickness may be the brand of formula I was using (Aptamil) and that I should swap to Cow & Gate. I did everything to try and prevent her being sick but nothing seemed to work. The hospital said it was reflux and would soon pass. By the end of week two I just knew something wasn’t right. My beautiful preemie baby was losing weight rapidly and she just didn’t look right. Finally it was diagnosed that she had Pyloric Stenosis and needed an op. The first few weeks we had P1 in our bed – this was against all advice but I was doing anything to get as much sleep as possible with a baby that just wasn’t settled because she was constantly hungry.

This time round things have obviously been a lot smoother. P2 is a healthy full term baby. She eats, she poops, she cries and she sleeps (occasionally). I’ve got into a routine during the night where I feed P2 laying down in bed, I fall asleep, then half hour or an hour later I wake up and put her back in the Moses basket. Then she wakes an hour or two later and it’s the same process all over again.

I’m determined not to give in to co sleeping. But I’m pretty much doing it! I just know that if we stop using the Moses basket when the time comes to turf her out of the bed… Several months later or a year… It’s going to be traumatic. Probably more sleepless nights than to start with. P2 sleeps quite well in my opinion – every two to three hours – sometimes she has her odd nights where she’s awake for a few hours. But it’s nothing we can’t cope with.

Do you co sleep? Or are you strict with your child being in their own bed?
