Going through grief, especially from the death of a parent, is the toughest experience that a body can go through. I think for me it has even topped the pain of childbirth. I have heard, read and watched so many experiences of grief and what to expect. The top thing that has come out of it, is that grieving is everyone’s personal journey.
After experiencing grief for the first time when my Nan died and having it sadly turn into depression, it has been important to me this time that I focus on my mental well-being and listen to my body far better than I did eight years ago. Taking naps when I feel drained, reading books quietly by myself, going for walks and talking with family and friends.
As people tell you, grief comes in waves. Some tickle your toes on the beach, and others engulf your entire body and leave you gasping for air. I’ve been feeling all sorts of emotions and more specifically in the past few weeks. Daily life through grief is about surviving each day as an individual day, there’s no planning for what may happen in the next hour but I’ve been wanting to prepare myself and equip myself to help me battle through those days with strength.
If I’m being completely honest with you, I never trusted the idea of herbal remedies and essential oils. That’s why it would never have crossed my mind to reach for something like that to help lift my mood or fix illnesses. Then right at the perfect moment, an email from Scentered arrived with an opportunity to try out their products. I explained my situation and was recommended to try the Scentered Signature Ritual Collection Therapy Balms. There would be no harm in trying something new if it helped me embark on this new life ahead of me.
My Signature Ritual Collection balms arrived in a beautiful travel-friendly purse that is made from recycled water bottles. It’s designed to last a lifetime to help minimise the impact on the environment. I’m rubbish with colours but I’m describing it as a teal colour. Very fashionable and timeless. The purse has space for five therapy balms.
This collection is quite pricey, costing £72 for 5 x 5g / 0.17 oz therapy balms. I’ve said it’s pricey, but in all honesty, I’m not sure what is the average price for aromatherapy oils and balms. But in my own personal opinion, I’d struggle to justify that money to my rather frugal husband.
For those like me, who are new to the world of aromatherapy and essential oils, I did a little bit of research to understand how they’re meant to work. Basically, essential oils are natural oils extracted from plants usually and used to ease stress, boost moods, get a better night sleep or relieve pain and other benefits too.
Essential oils enter our bodies by absorption through the skin, or inhalation through the nose. By absorbing through the skin or the nose, they create an effect much more quickly than taking a pill. Medication that is swallowed has to be digested before a result can be seen. I thought this was mind-blowing actually.
You can find out more about the way the body absorbs essential oils and the effects they can have on your body by visiting the Scentered website.
Back to the product and my thoughts.
Each balm is 100% natural, essential oil-based balm. It looks like a giant lip balm and the packaging seems to be eco-friendly too. Scentered also sell refills which is very useful. As they are balms and not liquid oil, the therapy balms are mess-free and won’t spill in your bag!
The Signature Ritual Collection comes with five different fragrances for different areas of your life. They are all different, beautiful metallic colours. I’m actually so drawn to the colouring of the packaging. Each therapy balm is designed to do a different job and the five areas are potentially rather important in my current lifestyle. I’m going to go through them individually for you now:
HAPPY - This one is grapefruit, lemon myrtle and spearmint fragrance. The citrus and mint blend is said to bring an instant burst of positivity and I have to admit, when I inhale the smells deeply I definitely feel uplifted. The Grapefruit helps lifts your spirits, while Lemon Myrtle energises and refreshes, and Spearmint is both uplifting and positive. It’s a beautiful smell that has definitely helped me feel more positive and happy.
SLEEP WELL - I’m a big lover of lavender scents. It reminds me of my childhood holidays in Scotland with my Grandparents. Although I usually fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, I was excited to enjoy the lavender fragrance at bedtime. The Sleep Well therapy balm has a mixture of Lavender, Chamomile, Palmarosa and Ho Wood. It’s a very calming smell. After having my vaccine I have struggled to sleep, when I use my balm I have found that I’m sleeping more soundly than the days I forget to use it. It’s been so surprising to me!
FOCUS - Rosemary, Mint and Clary Sage is the three fragrances used. This one was so strange as it instantly made me think of roast dinners, my favourite meal. How odd! It’s such a great blend of smells. I haven’t used it for focus yet. The Rosemary is used to increase alertness and boost memory something I definitely need, my memory is like a sieve! Mint helps stimulate mental activity and increase focus on cognitive tasks. Clary Sage aids in relieving mental fatigue and promoting mental clarity. I have plans to use this therapy balm on the days where I want to work on my blog and be productive.
ESCAPE - This one is a blend of Oud, Frankincense and Sandalwood. This has a real earthy and wood scent to it. It almost reminds me of Christmas. This one is used for moments of me-time. Perfect for applying ahead of reading a book, doing a yoga class or just spending some quiet time alone. Christmas is a happy time so the fact it reminds me of those moments gives me hope that this will be the perfect addition to those teeny moments of me-time that I can grab!
DE-STRESS - I love this one. It has Chamomile, Neroli and Mandarin blended together and they work so well. It sort of has a sweeties kind of smell. It’s soothing and helps keep you calm and in control. I tend to reach for the Happy or Escape options before I go to the De-Stress balm. This scent is quite strong for me and I prefer a more subtle option.
As you could probably tell, I never thought I’d be one to reach for anything aromatherapy related but doing this product review has totally opened up my eyes. After such a short time of using the therapy balms, I have started to notice a significant improvement in my mental well-being and also my sleeping too. I feel more in control and calmer.
I hope you’ll take some time to take a look at the Scentered website and hopefully find a therapy balm that suits you!
